NC Ireland Golf Tours

Gregory MacDonald Ireland Golf Tour June 2023

Itinerary

7 Nights, 5 Rounds of Top Links and 1 Day exploring Giants Causeway

Day 1 - Sat June 17th - Arrival Dublin Airport and Drive to Derry City

Arrive at Dublin Airport and travel 3hrs to Northern Irelands historic City of Derry. Your accomadation will be one of our Luxury Homestays – The Jazz House.

The Jazz House is a fully restored Opulent Edwardian Grand Townhouse located immediately next door to our sister property the Art House. Only a 10 minute walk from the City Centre to the many Restaurants, Bars & Cafes.
Taking inspiration from the 1930’s style Speak-Easy Era, we invite you to stay at one of our 6 Jazz inspired guest rooms, such as The Ella Fitzgerald Room,  The Billy Holiday Room or even at our Local Legend Room, The Gay McIntyre Suite! Your working kitchen will have supplies for breakfast such as coffee/tea, selection of breads and cereals.
Enjoy an afternoon Private tour around the historic Derry City. Join your guide as they take you around key locations in and around the only intact walled city in Ireland.  Passionate in their storytelling, the guides mix humour and history while telling the story in a sensitive way.  Learn more about the varied and poignant stories of the city – The Bloody Sunday Story, the Apprentice Boys history, the traditions of the marching season, the famous murals and of course the walls themselves. The tour takes approx. 1-2hrs.

Day 2 - Sun 18th June - Portsalon Golf Club

Your first Irish Links is the Hidden Gem of Portsalon Links located 1hr from your Homestay.

Portsalon Golf Club was established in 1891 and is one of the founder members of the Golfing Union of Ireland, the oldest golfing union in the world. This wonderful links course remains one of Irish golf’s best kept secrets.

The course simply exudes character and charm, does not suffer from any pretensions of greatness and offers all visitors a warm welcome. Portsalon  is a course blessed by nature, with most of the course set in glorious duneland  along the shores of Lough Swilly

Not only is Portsalon a magnificent test of golf, its setting is truly breath taking. The golden sands along Ballymastocker Bay and the majesty of Lough Swilly and the Inishowen Hills beyond provide the backdrop for almost 7000 yards that will enthral and challenge any golfer. Redesigned in 2001 by Pat Ruddy, dune lined fairways, cannily placed bunkers and well protected greens are the hallmark of Portsalon.

Day 3 - Mon 19th June - Rosapenna Old Tom Morris

Today your Golf adventure is located 1 hr west of Derry City. Golfers have been travelling to Rosapenna since the late 19th century when the Old Tom Morris was ranked 3rd in the British Isles behind only The Old Course at St.Andrews and The Royal County Down Golf Club. With the addition of the hotel soon after the Old Tom Morris Links opened in 1893 Rosapenna is the true first golf resort in the world.

In 2003 Rosapenna opened a second course the Sandy Hills Links designed by Pat Ruddy of The European Club fame. In its relatively short lifetime the Sandy Hills Links has been met with rave reviews and steadily climbed the rankings as it matures into one of the worlds finest modern links courses.

Day 4 - Tues 20th June - Castlerock Links

40mins drive along the north coast and you arrive at Castlerock Links.

Castlerock Golf Club, is a classic links course set amid towering dunes. Situated on the Causeway coast and only a 20 minute drive from both Royal Portrush Golf Club and Portstewart Golf Club, Castlerock is a more than worthy neighbor to both of these great Irish links. Its scenic qualities embrace the river Bann flowing out to the Atlantic, and also eye-catching views of Donegal and on a clear day towards Scotland and the Isle of Islay. An ideal retreat in which to play golf.

In 2015, Castlerock was awarded Hidden Gem of Northern Ireland. The Golf Club lies on Ireland’s North Coast near Coleraine, about 60-minutes’ drive from Belfast city. The traditional links course is one of many North Ireland gems golf courses.

Day 5 - Wed 21st June - Giants Causeway, Bushmills Distillery and Carrick Rope Bridge

On your day off sightseeing I highly recommend the following which is 1hr from Derry City along the beautiful causeway coast.

Mussenden Temple – Discover the striking 18th-century mansion of the eccentric Earl Bishop that now lies in ruin, then explore Mussenden Temple, perched on the cliff edge. As an extra treat you can learn about the reality of life in the rural 17th-century cottage of Hezlett House, told through people who once lived there in one of Northern Ireland’s oldest buildings.

Giants Causeway – Visit Northern Ireland’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site and learn how the Causeway was formed with one of our award-winning storytellers by booking Visitor Experience tickets. We have guided tours running every hour; or you can pick up an audio guide and unlock the secrets of this landscape at your own pace, with information available in 11 languages and options to suit all ages.

Carrick-a-Rede – A ramble across the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge is arguably one of the most unique things to do on the Antrim Coast. The first rope bridge was built 1755 to facilitate salmon fishing. Over the years, the material used for the bridge advance for safety purposes. The current Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge now hangs 25 feet above the chilly waters below and it’s a cosy one meter wide.

Bushmills Distillery – On the way home, stop off at the Bushmills Distillery. The Bushmills brand portfolio includes five award-winning whiskies: Bushmills Original, Black Bush, Bushmills 10 Year Single Malt, Bushmills 16 Year Single Malt and Bushmills 21 Year Single Malt. In 2017 we added Red Bush to our core range. We also have our Distillery Reserve, a 12 Year Single Malt available to taste and buy only from the Distillery. During your tour you will see the copper potstills used to distil this special spirit. The triple-distillation is at the heart of all Bushmills whiskies and creates a unique combination of smoothness and richness.

Day 6 - Thur 22nd June - Ballyliffin Glashedy Links

Leave Derry around in the morning (40min drive) to Nancys Barn for breakfast which is located 5 mins from the Golf Course and enjoy a traditional Irish Breakfast.. When I play Ballyliffin I can’t drive past here without stopping.

Ballyliffin has rapidly gained acclaim and recognition as one of the finest golf clubs in the world. Situated on the northern most tip of Ireland, at the start of the Wild Atlantic Way, Ballyliffin is now firmly on the itinerary of every discerning golfer visiting this island. The Glashedy Links has hosted the European Tour 2018 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, the 2016 Irish Close Championship and Boys Home Internationals, The Interprovincial Championships in 2006, the European Tour North West of Ireland Open in 2002 and the Ladies Irish Open in 1998.

After your round, sit back and take in the views from the Clubhouse and even try the fantastic food and drink that’s on offer.

Day 7 - Fri 23rd June - Portstewart Links

50mins drive towards the historic golfing area of N.Ireland you will find the outstanding Championship Strand Course which was the host for the 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. Jon Rahm, the 2017 Winner was certainly impressed stating, “the golf course is amazing. It’s probably one of the most beautiful golf courses I have ever seen, if not the most”. The views from almost every hole are quite simply, magical.

The Atlantic is never very far away and the beauty of the course has to be seen to be believed. It is a treat that will take a very long time, if ever, to fade from the golfers memory.
