Itinerary

7 Nights, 6 Rounds of Links including Royal County Down and Royal Portrush

Day 1 - Arrival into Dublin or Shannon Airport and travel to Derry City.

Arrive into Ireland and make your way to The Ebrington Hotel & Spa in Derry City. Opulence, theatre and luxury are combined in this unique hotel making it one of the coolest places to stay in the city due to its design & proximity to all the major attractions.  A Landmark building in the city since 1842, our hotel combines modern luxury and Georgian style in a former army barracks. Offering our guests, a warm welcome and the best in hotel hospitality, you can expect outstanding food and drink in our 2 AA Rosette Restaurant, spacious contemporary guest rooms, exceptional customer service and a history you can truly feel in the walls. Your stay at The Ebrington will be an experience without compromise.

Visiting Derry is not just a trip, it’s an opportunity to embrace history, culture, and life in all its beauty and diversity. As Northern Ireland’s second largest city, Derry/Londonderry boasts an incredible history that stretches back centuries, evident in its well-preserved medieval walls, historic landmarks, and fascinating museums.  Whether you’re looking for the best food, exploring the many historical locations, here to enjoy the craic or ready to shop boutique, one of a kind stores, the city has it all.

Day 2 - Castlerock Mussenden Links

Castlerock Golf Club, is a classic links course set amid towering dunes. Situated on the Causeway coast and only a 20 minute drive from both Royal Portrush Golf Club and Portstewart Golf Club, Castlerock is a more than worthy neighbour to both of these great Irish links.

Founded in April 1901, the original course comprised nine holes and was laid out on the western part of the present course. Additional land was leased in 1908 and Ben Sayers, the professional from North Berwick in Scotland, was commissioned to design an eighteen hole layout. Though better known as a club maker, Sayers produced a superb layout and insisted that the links of Castlerock would equal those at Troon, North Berwick and Sandwich. Though not officially recorded, it is known that Harry Colt, while spending much time in Ireland with his work at Royal Portrush, was consulted regarding the redesign of the Castlerock links around 1930.

Today, Castlerock is rated as one of Ireland’s finest links courses and its status in the game is reflected by the fact that it has hosted many National Championships both Amateur and Professional.

After your round, visit the Mussenden Temple and Benone Beach. Mussenden Temple is an iconic landmark, perched right on the cliff edge at Downhill Demesne. It’s one of the most photographed places in Ireland. The Mussenden Temple was built in around 1783 by the Earl Bishop and designed by the architect Michael Shanahan. Its design was based on the Temple of Vesta in Italy.

Day 3 - Rosapenna St Patricks

Golfers have been travelling to Rosapenna since the late 19th century when the Old Tom Morris was ranked 3rd in the British Isles behind only The Old Course at St.Andrews and The Royal County Down Golf Club. With the addition of the hotel soon after the Old Tom Morris Links opened in 1893 Rosapenna is the true first golf resort in the world.

Tom Doak is one of the great modern course architects and he’s created another superb golf course with St Patrick’s Links at Rosapenna. Taking what was once 36 holes and turning that land into 18 epic holes, the course delivers a sprawling rollercoaster of holes, travelling across dramatic terrain, offering incredible views of the beautiful surrounds and has taken the golf world by storm, culminating in its debut as the highest new entry at #55 in the World

Day 4 - Ballyliffin Glashedy Links

Leave Derry around in the morning (40min drive) to Nancys Barn for breakfast which is located 5 mins from the Golf Course and enjoy a traditional Irish Breakfast.. When I play Ballyliffin I can’t drive past here without stopping.

Ballyliffin has rapidly gained acclaim and recognition as one of the finest golf clubs in the world. Situated on the northern most tip of Ireland, at the start of the Wild Atlantic Way, Ballyliffin is now firmly on the itinerary of every discerning golfer visiting this island. The Glashedy Links has hosted the European Tour 2018 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, the 2016 Irish Close Championship and Boys Home Internationals, The Interprovincial Championships in 2006, the European Tour North West of Ireland Open in 2002 and the Ladies Irish Open in 1998.

After your round, sit back and take in the views from the Clubhouse and even try the fantastic food and drink that’s on offer.

Day 5 - Portstewart Strand Links

50mins drive towards the historic golfing area of N.Ireland you will find the outstanding Championship Strand Course which was the host for the 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. Jon Rahm, the 2017 Winner was certainly impressed stating, “the golf course is amazing. It’s probably one of the most beautiful golf courses I have ever seen, if not the most”. The views from almost every hole are quite simply, magical.

The Atlantic is never very far away and the beauty of the course has to be seen to be believed. It is a treat that will take a very long time, if ever, to fade from the golfers memory.

After your round of golf, have lunch at Harry’s Shack located below the course on the beach. A rustic seafood restaurant right on the beautiful beach of Portstewart Strand. Its fresh fish and seafood from local boats, local beers, quality wines and its fabulous views make it a truly unique location on Irelands North Coast. After your belly is almost full, go to The Harbour Bar for one of the best Guinness in Ireland.

Day 6 - Royal Portrush Dunluce

The Dunluce Links course is considered to be one of the best courses in the world. It was ranked fourth by Golf World in their list of “The 100 greatest courses in the British Isles” in November 1996. Golf Magazine ranked it twelfth in their list of the Top 100 Courses in the World, and Golf Digest ranked it as the fourth best course outside the United States in 2007.

The Links is named after the nearby ruins of the medieval Dunluce Castle located on the edge of a basalt outcropping overlooking the sea between Portrush and Portballintrae.

The original architect was the famed Harry Colt who produced a breath-taking golf links opening up views of the Atlantic Ocean. In 2015, in for the hosting of The Open in 2019, redesign works commenced under the stewardship of Martin Ebert.

After Portrush you make your way to Royal County Down, staying for 2 nights at the magnificent Slieve Donard Hotel.

A beloved destination for families, golfers, and holiday travellers, Slieve Donard is a local landmark that’s equal parts homey and breath-taking. The resort sits at the foot of the Mourne Mountains Slieve Donard’s elegant new look is inspired by the hotel’s impressive history. Reimagined lobby spaces, guest rooms, bars and restaurants channel Slieve Donard’s original splendour. Freshly updated guest rooms evoke Victorian splendour, the hotel’s rich history and its glorious landscapes. Local legends grace the walls, while wilderness colours blend beautifully with custom designs to create an unforgettable stay.

Day 7 - Royal County Down Championship

Voted Number 1 in the World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses, Royal County Down is located in one of the world’s most naturally beautiful links settings in the Murlough Nature Reserve. Against the magnificent backdrop of the Mountains of Mourne, the links stretches along the shores of Dundrum Bay, zigzagging back and forth to provide a different vista from virtually every hole. The narrowest ribbons of fairways thread their way through as impressive a set of sand dunes as could be imagined.

The fairways are surrounded by purple heather and golden gorse, so beautiful to look at but so punishing for any who may stray from the prescribed path. The ‘bearded’ bunkers are world famous and feature overhanging lips of marram, red fescue and heather. The greens are fast and many are domed, rejecting any shot lacking conviction. This is a true test of any player’s command of the traditional bump and run, the preferred way to play any links.
