Today your Golf adventure is located 1 hr west of Derry City. Golfers have been travelling to Rosapenna since the late 19th century when the Old Tom Morris was ranked 3rd in the British Isles behind only The Old Course at St.Andrews and The Royal County Down Golf Club. With the addition of the hotel soon after the Old Tom Morris Links opened in 1893 Rosapenna is the true first golf resort in the world.
Tom Doak is one of the great modern course architects and he’s created another superb golf course with St Patrick’s Links at Rosapenna. Taking what was once 36 holes and turning that land into 18 epic holes, the course delivers a sprawling rollercoaster of holes, travelling across dramatic terrain, offering incredible views of the beautiful surrounds and has taken the golf world by storm, culminating in its debut as the highest new entry at #55 in the World.
Only 40mins drive along the north coast and you arrive at Castlerock Links.
Castlerock Golf Club, is a classic links course set amid towering dunes. Situated on the Causeway coast and only a 20 minute drive from both Royal Portrush Golf Club and Portstewart Golf Club, Castlerock is a more than worthy neighbour to both of these great Irish links. Its scenic qualities embrace the river Bann flowing out to the Atlantic, and also eye-catching views of Donegal and on a clear day towards Scotland and the Isle of Islay. An ideal retreat in which to play golf.
In 2015, Castlerock was awarded Hidden Gem of Northern Ireland. The Golf Club lies on Ireland’s North Coast near Coleraine, about 60-minutes’ drive from Belfast city. The traditional links course is one of many North Ireland gems golf courses.
Bushmills Distillery – On the way home, stop off at the Bushmills Distillery. The Bushmills brand portfolio includes five award-winning whiskies: Bushmills Original, Black Bush, Bushmills 10 Year Single Malt, Bushmills 16 Year Single Malt and Bushmills 21 Year Single Malt. In 2017 we added Red Bush to our core range. We also have our Distillery Reserve, a 12 Year Single Malt available to taste and buy only from the Distillery. During your tour you will see the copper potstills used to distil this special spirit. The triple-distillation is at the heart of all Bushmills whiskies and creates a unique combination of smoothness and richness.
Donegal Golf Course is a links course built on a promontory of 182 acres that extends out into the Atlantic Ocean. The course, built on land of geological significance, was inhabited in past centuries, and the earliest of Irish maps indicate this. The outside loop plays along the dunes and the ocean, providing stunning views of the surrounding area. The inner loop is more protected, however the constantly changing sea breeze provides a continuing test for both pro and amateur golfer.
Despite its length, the course is an easy walk, broken up by the outstanding views, wildlife and display of fauna and flora that continues to change and evolve throughout the year.
Leave Derry around in the morning (40min drive) to Nancys Barn for breakfast which is located 5 mins from the Golf Course and enjoy a traditional Irish Breakfast.. When I play Ballyliffin I can’t drive past here without stopping.
Ballyliffin has rapidly gained acclaim and recognition as one of the finest golf clubs in the world. Situated on the northern most tip of Ireland, at the start of the Wild Atlantic Way, Ballyliffin is now firmly on the itinerary of every discerning golfer visiting this island. The Glashedy Links has hosted the European Tour 2018 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, the 2016 Irish Close Championship and Boys Home Internationals, The Interprovincial Championships in 2006, the European Tour North West of Ireland Open in 2002 and the Ladies Irish Open in 1998.
After your round, sit back and take in the views from the Clubhouse and even try the fantastic food and drink that’s on offer.
50mins drive towards the historic golfing area of N.Ireland you will find the outstanding Championship Strand Course which was the host for the 2017 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. Jon Rahm, the 2017 Winner was certainly impressed stating, “the golf course is amazing. It’s probably one of the most beautiful golf courses I have ever seen, if not the most”. The views from almost every hole are quite simply, magical.
The Atlantic is never very far away and the beauty of the course has to be seen to be believed. It is a treat that will take a very long time, if ever, to fade from the golfers memory.
The Dunluce Links course is considered to be one of the best courses in the world. It was ranked fourth by Golf World in their list of “The 100 greatest courses in the British Isles” in November 1996. Golf Magazine ranked it twelfth in their list of the Top 100 Courses in the World, and Golf Digest ranked it as the fourth best course outside the United States in 2007.
The Links is named after the nearby ruins of the medieval Dunluce Castle located on the edge of a basalt outcropping overlooking the sea between Portrush and Portballintrae.
The original architect was the famed Harry Colt who produced a breath-taking golf links opening up views of the Atlantic Ocean. In 2015, in for the hosting of The Open in 2019, redesign works commenced under the stewardship of Martin Ebert.
