The Murvagh peninsula jutting out into Donegal Bay is the home of Donegal Golf Club. It’s an enchanting and isolated setting for a big links course. The panoramic view across the bay is sensational, with the Bluestack Mountains providing a dramatic backdrop.
The 5th hole, 185-yard par three, you enter dune country. This one shot hole, called “Valley of Tears”, is a brute. A semi-blind tee shot to a narrow plateau green, we must make sure that we select the right club to traverse the valley and the bunkers in front of and below the raised green. The next three holes are stunning where the fairways rollercoaster up and down, flanked by huge shaggy sand dunes. At the turn, we are faced with a thrilling back nine, including the 12th, a monster par five, and the sadistic par three 16th, measuring nigh on 250 yards from the back tees.
The club has hosted a number of provincial and national tournaments down the years. In addition to our featured Irish Women’s Close championship, Donegal has staged theIrish Men’s Close championship, the Irish Senior Amateur Open, the Ulster Boys’ AmateurOpen and the All-Ireland Finals of Cups and Shields.
County Sligo – or Rosses Point, as it is better known – is an exhilarating west coast links, situated in the heart of Yeats country. W.B.Yeats won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. It’s a strategic links with dramatic undulations, raised plateau greens, run-offs, high ground, low ground, and cliffs, challenging bunkering, burns and dunes. County Sligo has it all, including unusual routing over three distinctly different sections. The back nine, especially the 11th to the 17th, played on the headland, are truly magnificent. The sheer individuality of holes and the varied terrain makes County Sligo an absolute must-play golf course.
The views of the Darty Mountains and Benbulben, Sligo’s limestone “Table Mountain”, are simply beautiful. Drumcliffe Bay sweeps around the golf course. Its fine long sandy beaches, the Atlantic and the harbour are often in full panoramic view. The Ox Mountains – Knockalong the highest peak – add a further dimension to the already stunning vista.
Strandhill Golf Club is located on Ireland’s Atlantic coast near Sligo and offers a captivating 18-hole links golf experience that combines the natural beauty of its surroundings with a challenging and rewarding par 70 course. With 6,200 yards of undulating fairways and unforgiving shortcuts, it promises an unforgettable journey for all who play it.
Founded in 1931 as a nine-hole golf course, Strandhill Golf Club has a rich history that has seen it evolve into the premier golfing destination in Sligo. The course was redesigned in 1939 by John McAlister, setting the stage for the club’s growth and the development of its golfing legacy.
As you navigate the course, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the majestic Knocknarea mountain serving as a breathtaking backdrop. Culleenamore Strand and Strandhill Beach add to the scenic charm, creating a picturesque setting for your 18-hole round.

The course is set in magnificent, unspoilt sand dunes stretching 150m above sea level. There are breathtaking views of the Atlantic across Blacksod Bay and the legendary islands of Inis Glóire and Inis Géidhe. The course features eighteen amazing holes designed by the late Eddie Hackett. True to his philosophy for respecting the natural landscape, the tees and greens occurred naturally and very little earth moving was involved in the course construction. Carne was the last course designed by Hackett and many say it is his most challenging.
The back nine of the Hackett 18 integrates with the newer Kilmore Nine course, creating the Wild Atlantic Dunes course, which is arguably the most spectacular links course in Ireland. Raw and untamed, with increased drama as the holes weave their way through the awe inspiring corners of the dune system. It is arguably the biggest dunes course in the world. Carne offers traditional raw links golf at its very best in a truly unique and idyllic golfing location, an experience not to be missed.

Enniscrone Golf Club is one of Ireland’s finest links golf courses located on the scenic West Coast of Ireland. Known for having some of the largest dunes in Ireland, the club is situated on a promontory that juts into Killala Bay at the mouth of the River Moy Estuary. This provides Enniscrone with one of the most beautiful settings for the uncompromised playing characteristics of Irish links golf.
Originally designed by the great Eddie Hackett – Enniscrone Golf Club’s reputation as a top class golf venue has been embellished with the addition of six new holes threading the path through the mountainous dunes. The new holes, expertly designed by the famous course architect, Donald Steele, add an exciting dimension to the 27 hole golf championship layout.
In true links fashion, Enniscrone’s layout is ‘nine out’ and ‘nine back’ to the clubhouse. Each golf hole follows the natural contours of the land. Twelve of the Dunes eighteen holes at Enniscrone Golf Club wind through the tall shaggy dunes on the coast. A sense of isolation and tranquillity surrounds you, along with tall marram grass roughs. The last four finishing holes are exhilarating and border the Atlantic Ocean.
